WAXAHACHIE – On Sept. 30, 2026, an Ellis County jury convicted Roderick Davenport, 42 of Waxahachie of second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, sentencing him to 15 years in prison and a $1,000 fine.
According to evidence presented at the trial, the incident began on March 9, 2025, after Davenport became heavily intoxicated while visiting family members with his wife.
Upon returning to their home, Davenport initiated a verbal dispute in the kitchen and threw an alcoholic drink at his wife. When she threw a closed water bottle back and told him to stop, Davenport charged her, delivering multiple punches and trapping her in a corner of the dining room.
Davenport then weaponized a wooden dining room chair, striking her in the head with the edge of the seat with enough force to chip the furniture and inflict a deep laceration.
Fearing a second strike, the victim fled into the street without her keys or phone and flagged down a passing motorist for assistance.
Emergency medical personnel and the Waxahachie PD responded, discovering Davenport was barricaded inside the residence with access to multiple firearms.
Officers initiated an hour-long standoff. Davenport ignored commands via phone and intercom to surrender until a family member finally convinced him to exit the home. He remained aggressive and non-compliant during his arrest.
During the trial’s punishment phase, jurors reviewed Davenport’s previous criminal history, which included a 2008 deferred adjudication probation for prostitution in Dallas County, two 2018 DWI convictions in Dallas County, and a 2022 probation for assaulting a family member in Tarrant County.
