The start of a new school year is the perfect time to establish a new routine.

Citizens are encouraged to make reading and library time a fun part of their weekly schedule. Just 20 minutes of reading a day can help improve vocabulary and reading comprehension.

With school back in session, so are our weekly programs! We are excited to welcome families back to Story Time every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Join us for stories, crafts, and activities designed to develop early literacy and social skills. We are also happy to announce our newest afterschool program “Homework Help.” This program offers children free help with homework every Tuesday and Wednesday after school. Families can reserve their slot by calling the library at (972) 544-2110 x 9 or by emailing ferrislibrary@ferristexas.gov.

The Ferris Public Library wishes all of our students, school staff and families a successful school year. We look forward to seeing you at the library.

NEW BOOKS: “The Mother-Daughter Book Club” by Susan Patterson, “Mad Mabel” by Sally Hepworth, “The Midnight Train” by Matt Haig, “Weddings” by Danielle Steel, “New School Barbecue: Recipes for Next-Level Smoking and Grilling” (Dewey 641) by Evan LeRoy, and “NOLO Law Forms for Personal Use” (Dewey 347) by The Editors of Nolo.

BOOK BLURB: “Mad Mabel” by Sally Hepworth, released 2026.

Meet Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick: 81-years-old, gloriously grumpy, fiercely independent, and never without a hot cup of tea – or a cutting remark. She minds her own business in her quiet Melbourne suburb, until a neighbor turns up dead and the whispers start flying.

Because Elsie hasn’t always been Elsie. Once upon a headline, she was Mad Mabel Waller – Australia’s youngest convicted murderer. But was she really mad, or just misunderstood? Either way, she’s kept her secret buried for decades.

Is she a cantankerous old lady with a shady past? A cold-blooded killer with arthritis? Or just someone who’s finally ready to tell her side of the story?

The library is located at 301 E. 10th St., across from Mutz Ballpark. Library staff may be reached at ferrislibrary@ferristexas.gov or (972) 544-2110, Option 9.
