WAXAHACHIE – The Waxahachie City Council unanimously approved a resolution earlier this month at a council meeting to install special street name sign markers within the cities’ Historic Freedmen’s Town.
A social media post read, “This is an important step in honoring the rich history and cultural heritage of this vibrant community.”
The resolution vote has been in the works over the past several months, with city staff working closely with the residents of Waxahachie’s historic east side to learn more about the area, share stories, and diving deep into historical records and maps.
It was noted, “This collaboration has been instrumental in recognizing the legacy of Freedmen’s Town and the profound contributions its people have made to shaping Waxahachie’s story.”
There will be customized street name signage installed throughout the area to celebrate the people, places, and history that make Freedmen’s Town so significant to Waxahachie’s history.
