WAXAHACHIE – The Ellis A&M Club, a nonprofit corporation and a local extension of The Association of Former Students of Texas A&M University, invites the community to a special patriotic event on the steps of the historic Old Ellis County Courthouse.

On Saturday, July 4, immediately following the Waxahachie Independence Day Parade, Club members and local students will read the full text of the Declaration of Independence aloud (estimated to take place at approximately 11:30 am).

This reading commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States declaring its independence through one of the most important historical documents in history to the cause of freedom and liberty.

By bringing the words of the Declaration to life with student readers, the Club honors the 56 signers who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to birth the greatest nation on Earth and inspires a new generation to uphold those founding principles.

This year also marks the 150th anniversary of Texas A&M University first opening its doors for classes in 1876 highlighting the long-standing Aggie tradition of patriotic community involvement and civic responsibility as well as Texas A&M’s enduring legacy of developing leaders who have served with distinction in military service, public office, and civic life throughout Texas and the United States.

The public reading is free to attend and open to all ages.

It is expected to last 20-30 minutes.
