ENNIS – The Ellis County GOP has commented on newly elected Ellis County Precinct 2 Commissioner Matthew Zajic’s recent arrest in Ennis.
Zajic was arrested in connection with a Theft of Property (>$100–<$750), which is a Class B Misdemeanor.
“The Ellis County Republican Party has been made aware of the recent arrest of Precinct 2 County Commissioner Matt Zajic,” a GOP release stated.
“As Republicans, we believe in both the rigorous enforcement of laws to protect individuals and business from theft and the fundamental Constitutional principle that every American is entitled to due process under the law.
“An arrest is an allegation, not a conviction, and it is important that the legal process be allowed to proceed based on facts and evidence rather than speculation.”
Zajic was accused of shoplifting approximately $250 worth of merchandise at the Walmart in Ennis and was reportedly caught on store surveillance video.
It was reported, the store personnel spoke with Zajic regarding the unpaid merchandise, but he apparently had not corrected the issue before leaving the store.
The Republican Party reminded in its formal statement regarding the incident it has “long stood for the rule of law, equal justice, and integrity in public service.
“Those principles apply to every citizen and every public official. We expect all elected leaders to cooperate fully with the legal process and to continue serving the public with professionalism and transparency.”
“Therefore, the Republican Party of Ellis County has determined that at this time, “we will not speculate on the outcome of an ongoing matter.
“We encourage the public to allow the judicial process to run its course and to refrain from drawing conclusions before all facts are known.
“The Ellis County Republican Party remains focused on advancing conservative principles, supporting effective local government, and serving the citizens of Ellis County. We will continue to monitor the situation and update you as appropriate.”
