The Ferris Public Library has an exciting week of summer activities planned for families and children. Teens can get creative on Monday, June 29 at 3 p.m. as they paint and decorate their own light switch plates, turning an ordinary household item into a unique work of art.

Animal lovers won’t want to miss a special visit from the Dallas Zoo – Animal Adventures on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. Guests will have the opportunity to meet fascinating animals up close while learning about them from experienced educators.

Wednesday’s free Movie Matinee begins at 11 a.m. and features “The Bad Guys 2.” Admission, popcorn, and bottled water will be provided at no cost.

The week wraps up on Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. with a festive 4th of July craft. Check our Facebook page or stop by the library for a full calendar of events.

4TH OF JULY FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW:

• Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag in May - June of 1776, after 3 members (George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross) of a secret committee from the Continental Congress met with her in her home. The stars on the original American flag were in a circle so all the colonies would appear equal.

• On July 5, 1776, copies of the Declaration of Independence were handed out and on July 6, The Pennsylvania Evening Post became the first newspaper to print the document.

• In 1776, there were 2.5 million people living in the new nation. Today there are over 340 million.

• There are more than 30 towns nationwide that have the word “Liberty” in their names.

• Approximately 150 million hotdogs are consumed on the Fourth of July.

• Around $675 million dollars will be spent by consumers for fireworks on the Fourth of July.
