Portrait painting is not easy – but it’s not as difficult as some think.

Gene Dillard will be leading a workshop to make it easier for those who are experienced and for those who are not so experienced to enjoy portrait painting.

Mr. Dillard is an award-winning artist who has taught at Southern Methodist University, The University of North Texas and the Art Institute of Dallas.

Additionally, he has conducted workshops at several other major universities.

He holds art degrees from the University of Texas and Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.

The workshop will investigate some of the fine points of painting portraits from life, especially mastering flesh tones.

Great emphasis is given to managing the four properties of color:  value, hue, intensity and temperature as they apply to accurately capturing likenesses in portraiture.

There will be demonstrations and hands-on instruction.

Use of live models is incorporated to provide the ultimate visual aid for easy step-by-step painting processes for both aspiring and advanced attendees.

Instruction will be in oil on canvas. Each attendee will have the opportunity to experience painting-from-life session with individual coaching from Dillard.

The workshop will be Oct. 10-11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Studio 406, 406 West Franklin in Waxahachie.
