James Leaks, Sr. and Walter Beasley, Sr. honored for years of service

Ennis – Recently, the George Washington Carver High School Alumni Association of Ennis awarded their 2024 scholarship recipients from Ennis High School.

During the Juneteenth Program, the alumni association honored James Leaks, Sr. for 18 years of service as President and long-term school board trustee, Walter Beasley, Sr.

“We are proud to recognize our five scholarship recipients for their achievements in academic excellence,” said Shawn Lane, the scholarship chairman of the association.

Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. in honor of Lillian Alexander: $500

 

The alumni association also honored James Leaks, Sr. after 18 years of dedicated service as president. Under his leadership, the alumni association grew in numbers and was able to issue more annual scholarships to deserving students. 

Also honored was Walter Beasley, Sr. after a tenure on the Ennis I.S.D as a trustee providing diversity and assisting students enrolling in colleges around the country for 27 years.

“We are grateful for these leaders’ service to our community and their faithfulness to our association,” said Edward Lane, president- pro-tem. 

“Today, we continue the progress of all our previous leaders and look forward to honoring our leaders of tomorrow.”

Edward Lane thanked the Unity in the Community leaders, Dr. Charlotte Watson Allen and City Commissioner Shirley Watson for their hard work with the scholarship banquet program, the Juneteenth parade, and other festivities.

 

Founded in 1985, The GWC H.S. Alumni Association Association has established itself as an annual homecoming for former students of the all-colored high school that dissolved in 1967 upon integration.
