Old Brickyard Golf Club receives donation of professional golf clubs

FERRIS – Local resident and business owner Stephanie Edwards and her family recently surprised The Old Brickyard Golf Club with a generous donation. 

On behalf of The North Texas Patriot Guard and the Edwards’s family, this donation of a full set of professional line golf clubs, golf bag and accessories were donated in memory of her father, Retired Law Enforcement Officer Douglas Hampton. 

Hampton served as a Law Enforcement Officer in North Carolina and Georgia for over 20 years until his health forced him to retire. He moved to Texas two years ago to spend his remaining years being cared for by his daughter, and he absolutely fell in love with Texas. 

He was an avid golfer in his younger years, and played several well known courses around the country. 

He was also an EMT/First Responder and dedicated his life to the care and service of others.

Hampton passed away peacefully on Jan. 23, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Gary and Stephanie Edwards, in Ferris.

Stephanie’s brother, Brandon, in nursing school, could not make it to Texas to spend the final days with their dad. 

The family decided to honor their dad and keep his legacy alive, they would donate his clubs and accessories to The Old Brickyard, who hosts high school students each week for golf lessons. 

Inspired by this, family friend and owner of The Ellis County Press, Charles Hatfield, donated his clubs and accessories as well. 

On Monday morning, April 22, Stephanie’s brother Brandon flew in from Virginia to pay tribute to his dad and participate in the donation, along with several other family members. They met with Shawn Buchanan, instructor and staff member for the Old Brickyard, and made the donation of not one, but two golf bags and accessories in their dad’s memory. 

“It’s our desire as a family, to honor our dad’s legacy of love, service, and generosity through this donation,” said Stephanie. “We hope the young people that get to play with his clubs come to love the sport as he did.”
