RED OAK – In an offensive showdown, Red Oak fell in overtime to the Lake Belton 48-47 on Friday, Sept. 9 at home, with the visiting Broncos picking up their first ever district win as a new high school.

The Hawks used only 32 seconds to score their first touchdown, and the game was on.

Neither defense could really slow the other’s offense and with only a few exceptions, each team scored on nearly every possession.

Red Oak’s penalties didn’t help. In the 2nd half alone, 3 of their drives were halted by penalties, forcing the Hawks to punt the ball away.

The game came down to missed PATs for both teams. The Broncos missed an early PAT, and when the chance to score two on their next TD presented itself, the Hawks stopped them, forcing the Broncos to chase those points late into the 4th quarter.

The Hawks cashed in with just over 3 minutes left in the game and decided to go for two. The two-point conversion could’ve put the Hawks up 9 points and force the Broncos to score twice with little time left. However, the throw fell short of the Hawk’s receiver in the end zone, making it a 7-point game.

Lake Belton raced down the field and scored a touchdown with 27 seconds left on the clock, then kicked the extra point tying the game at 41-41.

Red Oak won the OT toss and quickly scored. On the extra point attempt, a Bronco defender made it into the backfield and blocked the kick. This gave the Hawks a 47-41 lead.

On the Broncos possession, the Hawks defense stiffened and forced the Broncos to the air, but Lake Belton’s QB completed a pass in the end zone to tie the game at 47-47. The Broncos lined up for their extra point attempt, and despite a full rush by the Hawks line, the Broncos’ kicker split the uprights winning the game 48-47 in overtime.

The Hawks fall to 2-1 (0-1 in district play). They travel to Killeen this Friday to take on the Ellison Eagles in a district game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Ellison Stadium. They return home on Sept. 30 and host the Shoemaker Wolves from Killeen.
