RED OAK – Prior to the football game, homecoming week concluded with the announcement of the homecoming court and homecoming king and queen. Once the ceremony was completed, it was football time.
The Hawks received the opening kickoff, and before the band and drill team could get seated back in the stands, the Hawks ran one play and scored, burning only :52 seconds to do so. QB Joshua Ervin completed a short out pass to WR Coby Cavil, who took it 75 yards to the end zone. Hawks up 7-0.
The defense forced a 3-and-out, and TJ punted. The Hawks again used one play to score. Erving hit LaKelsey Johnson on a crossing route and Johnson went 45 yards for the score. Hawks up 14-0 with less than 2 minutes into the 1st quarter.
After another 3-and-out, the Hawks went to the ground game, and once again they scored on the first possession. Ervin handed off to CJ Palmer in the back field and Palmer took it 25 yards to the house. Hawks up 21-0 with over 5 minutes left in the 1st.
The Hawks would score a total of 28 points in the 1st quarter alone. The 2nd quarter was a repeat of the 1st.
The Patriots had no answer for the Hawks offensive machine, and the Hawks defensive was incredibly stingy. With scores of their own and multiple interceptions, the domination continued when the Hawks defense, with less than 2 minutes left in the game, stopped the Patriots on a 4th and 1. This was as close as Thomas Jefferson would get in converting a single first down the entire game.
The Hawks slowed things down a bit in the 3rd quarter, scoring 14 points and repeating that score in the 4th quarter to a runaway 77-0 homecoming win.
The Hawks improved their record to 4-1, but more importantly, 2-0 in District 6 5A Division II. They now travel to Kimball on Friday, Oct. 11 to take on the Knights. The Knights are also 2-0 in district play, with a 59-7 win over Spruce last Friday. Last year, Red Oak defeated Kimball 26-12. This will be another good test for the Hawks as they continue district play.
Two groups who make Friday nights special had their own special events going on during the game. The Hawkettes hosted their 55th Anniversary Alumni Dance, where Hawkette alumni, spanning over 50 years, performed a dance routine with the 2019-2020 Hawkettes at halftime. The cheerleaders hosted their first cheerleading alumni event as well, and invited cheer alumni and cheer mom’s down on the sideline to cheer during the 2nd half of the game.
