WILMER – A standoff with a Wilmer man and the Wilmer Police and Dallas County Sheriff Department’s Tactical Team ended with the man’s suicide.

The Wilmer resident, whose name has not been released, shot himself Aug. 7 at around 3 a.m. at the Emili Liberty Crossing Apartments.

Wilmer police were originally called to the apartment complex after gunshots were reported. When police arrived, there were additional gunshots heard from inside the apartment.

Police learned a father and his young son were inside, and called the Dallas County Sheriff Department’s Tactical Team for assistance. Over the next few hours, the Dallas County SWAT unit made numerous unsuccessful efforts to communicate with the father.

Entry was eventually made into the apartment, where authorities found the father deceased as the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two-year-old son inside the apartment was unharmed and evaluated by a medical team.

The mother of the child inside the apartment was outside with police and another child during the standoff.

“Residents should never hesitate to reach out to Genius Women’s shelter or Metro Care,” said Wilmer Mayor Emmanuel Wealthy-Williams regarding the incident. “Join me in the fight against domestic violence and call (972) 441-6565 if you see signs of abuse.”

The Wilmer Police Department expresses appreciation to the Hutchins Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff Department for their quick response and resources.

Currently, this is an ongoing investigation with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
