WILMER – Wilmer Police were called to the Wilmer Animal Shelter last week in the 2200 block of Pleasant Run Road at 8:40 a.m. on a Criminal Mischief Report Wilmer Police Chief Victor Kemp said may be related to stealing copper.
“The department is investigating this as a criminal mischief, however it could quite possibly be an attempt at copper theft where the suspects got spooked or planned to come back,” Kemp said.
“There are no leads at this time.”
Copper thefts in the area have declined as copper prices have declined, Kemp added.
When police arrived at the location they met with City of Wilmer employees who explained the damage of property to police, including several power line wires cut off.
There was also damage to the sewer pump electrical box that powers the sewage pumps and damage to the sewage pump and the surrounding chain link fence on the property.
Police said it appeared the fence was cut off “up and down” in order for the suspects to get inside the property.
Officers searched the parameter for vehicle or track marks but were not able to locate any leads in the high grass surrounding the property.
City employees said the property was secured by a small pad lock, which was missing also.
The damage was estimated to be around $100 for replacement or repair.
“The city will be looking into security options to help prevent another or similar occurrences,” Kemp concluded.
