OVILLA – The Ovilla City Council addressed a discussion only item at this past Tuesday’s City Council meeting regarding the future possibility of creating an ordinance outlawing abortion in Ovilla.
The discussion was concerning the possibility of designating Ovilla as a sanctuary city for the unborn or adopting a resolution in support of the pro-life movement and recent court decisions regarding abortion.
The topic was placed on the agenda by Ovilla Mayor Pro-Tem Kimberly Case.
Ovilla City Manager David Henley said, “There is a question as to whether or not a Type A general law city can approve an enforceable ordinance.”
Ovilla’s city attorney is reviewing the information and at that point Ovilla councilmembers will determine next steps.
Ellis County Republican Party Chairman Randy Bellomy said he is also looking into a ruling on this from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Other cities in Texas have passed similar ordinances but operate under a different set of laws since Ovilla is a General Rule city.
