WAXAHACHIE – A 21-year-old man, Lincer Mejia Lopez, drowned over the weekend attempting to save a female teenager in distress, according to a Waxahachie Police Department Facebook post.
The incident occurred on Saturday, Aug. 24 at approximately 12:45 p.m. when Waxahachie Police and Fire-Rescue responded to a drowning call at Boat Dock Park at Lake Waxahachie.
Lopez, who reportly had just been baptized, jumped into the lake in an attempt to save the drowning girl.
His body was recovered from the lake and transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to police.
It was reported the distressed female was part of a large church group from Garland, Texas.
After being pulled out of the water by a Red Oak boater on the lake, CPR was performed on the girl who was successfully resuscitated. She was then taken to a local hospital for additional medical needs.
Lopez was the oldest of seven siblings, and a GoFundMe campaign has been set up (www.gofundme.com/f/help-bring-lincer-mejia-lopez-home-para-trasladar-cuerpo-mx) to transport his body back to Chiapas, Mexico, his hometown.
