ELLIS COUNTY – Ellis County resident Hannah Shelby has announced her candidacy for Ellis County Commissioner, Pct. 2.
The Precinct 2 seat was originally vacated before his term ended by former commissioner Lane Grayson and then passed on to Matt Zajic after he won Republican Primary runoff election in May.
Zajic was originally slated to take office in January 2027, but was appointed early to the seat by Ellis County Judge John Wray on May 27 to fill Grayson’s unexpired term.
Shelby, a local business owner, decided to file last week as a write-in candidate for the Ellis County Commissioner Precinct 2 seat.
While her formal press release made no comment by name as to the reason she decided to run as a write-in, Ellis County residents have been alarmed by Zajic in that seat with no opposition in November.
The alarm stems from his arrest by the Ennis Police Department twice in June.
He is currently facing multiple active misdemeanor theft charges following an ongoing investigation.
Shelby said “I, like many others in our area, have been concerned about a breach of trust in our representation on the Ellis County Commissioners Court.
“I believe I have the managerial and financial skills to serve as commissioner of Precinct 2 with honor and integrity, and I am eager to offer that choice.”
Since moving to Ellis County more than 20 years ago, Shelby said she has gained expertise in a variety of business and financial endeavors. She was the CFO for her family’s construction company in south Ellis County and eventually moved on to operate her own business. Additionally, she has had experience of managing up to 50 employees at various job sites.
She said she has always been active in a variety of sports while growing up in the Dallas area and due to this interest, she went on to become a fitness and bodybuilding professional athlete.
She and her husband Kevin have owned and operated Shelby Symmetry in Ellis County for the past 10 years.
She is also the mother of three adult children, and her husband is a United States Air Force veteran.
