RED OAK – An officer involved shooting that occurred in Red Oak involving Ellis County Sheriff’s Department deputies last week left one person dead.
The deceased person involved in the shooting has not been identified.
Ellis County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a disturbance call in the 100 block of Carol Lane in Red Oak at around 3:36 p.m. last Wednesday, May 6.
The report indicated a witness heard what was believed to be yelling and a firearm being discharged from a nearby residence, according to an Ellis County Sheriff’s Department release.
A second call was also received advising there was an adult male actively threatening self-harm.
When the Ellis County deputies arrived at the scene, one of the deputies “encountered the adult male armed with a firearm. My deputy gave the subject multiple commands to drop the weapon; however, the subject refused to comply and pointed the firearm at my deputy. As a result, my deputy discharged his weapon,” the release indicated.
The subject dropped to the ground, and the Sheriff’s Department reported that deputies immediately began providing medical treatment until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene.
The subject was taken to a Dallas-area hospital and was later pronounced dead.
“Anytime an incident like this occurs, it impacts everyone involved – including the individuals on scene, their families, the responding deputies, and the community,” said Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman.
“In accordance with standard protocol and in the interest of transparency, I have requested the Texas Rangers to take the lead in the investigation regarding this officer-involved shooting.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time. Any request for further information should be directed to the DPS.
