WILMER – Ready, set, it’s the second annual Mayor’s “Back 2 School Extravaganza” Saturday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Wilmer Mayor Emmanuel Wealthy-Williams said, “The purpose of the event is to send the kids back to school with a big bash, plus give them all they need to succeed.”
Wealthy-Williams said the plan is to help over 350 children with their needed school supplies this year.
The event will be held at the Wilmer Community Center, and the mayor said the city is receiving support and sponsorship from individuals, community churches, and local business such as the Blackburn Foundation, Girl Power [a non-profit organization], Denny’s and La Victoria Snacks, to name a few.
“This event is major to the city for a few reasons. It is one of the biggest events of the summer for our kids,” Wealthy-Williams added.
“Different service and resources are provided for parents and children. This event is for Wilmer kids with no financial restrictions to participate.”
Last year the Mayor’s Back 2 School Extravaganza event helped over 400 kids, with everything from school supplies to hygiene products, school uniforms, undergarments, haircuts and even backpacks.
There will also be health and eye exams, games and game trucks, food, bounce houses and prizes.
Currently, the only school in the City of Wilmer is the Early Childhood Center.
All other Wilmer students are bused to Ferris, Ennis. Hutchins, Dallas, Cedar Hill, Red Oak and Lancaster ISD schools.
“Our city is growing, and new families are moving to Wilmer every day,’ the Mayor concluded.
“We still need more sponsors too.
“Our children are our legacy,” said Wealthy-Williams.
