BONJOUR WORLD: Thompson Playa del Carmen; two vibes, one good time

Where else does a girl want to be if not in Playa del Carmen for Halloween?  I know I sure found a big smile on my face when I visited this little town several months ago compliments of Thompson Playa del Carmen.

While there are many hotel and lodging options in Playa de Carmen, for a more boutique and personalized experienced head to Thompson Playa Del Carmen for a vibe that is modern and personalized.

The Thompson Playa del Carmen actually has two properties in the little town one is on the beachfront and the other on 5th Avenue in the middle of the all the Playa del Carmen action.

The beachfront property is located on the famous La Quinta Avenida, which is Playa’s two-mile pedestrian only shopping and dining district.  At the beach house there are 27 rooms located on the beach and each room has a nice view toward the crystal clear Caribbean Ocean.  Downstairs at beach level there is a pool, beach bars, private cabanas and those hipster chairs and couches ala south of France scattered around the sand on the property and throughout the hotel area.

The Beach House version of Thompson Playa del Carmen opened in February of 2016 with an onsite restaurant called C Grill.  With a relaxed atmosphere that offers three meal services daily and from the same New York City-based team that brings you the sister property on 5th Avenue’s amazing CATCH menu.

C Grill served all manner of goodies while I was there featuring the new 2017 menu with Mexican flavors that feature a modern twist. You can choose from organic pork or lamb for meat lovers or ceviche, and other fresh seafood too.  The menu even has a cheese selection from Veracruz and the aim is food sources locally and responsibly from local farmers and fishermen.

If you want to be in the middle of the action in Plaza de Carmen, the 92-room location on 5th Avenue a few blocks away will be more to your liking.  The 5th Avenue location is where you will want to find yourself in the evenings since the rooftop is 30,000 square-feet of fun including an infinity pool, the restaurant CATCH, made famous from its New York sister property and of course, stunning views of the ocean.

This was also where I celebrated Halloween and in this area of Mexico there is also a celebration of Day of the Dead.  I had my face painted to get in the mood of the holiday, but first dinner at CATCH was a casual, but classy affair.

On the menu there we were served a variety of sushi rolls and sashimi, shrimp, mushroom spaghetti, Wagyu on a rock, an herb roasted catch of the day and Picanha. Dessert was a churro sphere and a Hit Me Chocolate Cake that was liquid Klondike with white chocolate, ice cream, brownie and devil’s food.  To say delectable is an understatement, all the meals at Thompson Playa del Carmen were heavenly.

Other fun activities you can indulge in while visiting include Mezcal tastings and ceviche making classes with culinary leader and the Executive chef Pedro Abascal. For the healthier minded the property offers yoga classes daily on the rooftop and bikes are available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to help you get to know the little town of Playa del Carmen properly.

Should you decide you want to take a tour to visit the local Mayans, to Tulum or to find the perfect place for cliff jumping, canoeing or even discovering the local caves, the staff at the property can help you set that up.

Whatever your heart desires, the Thompson Playa del Carmen folks are all about making your dreams comes true.
