OUT TO PASTOR: I love a mystery... when it’s a mystery

Because of the situation we are in these days, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I have spent some significant time watching mystery movies. I have always loved mysteries. I especially like those where the mystery is a challenge to figure out until the very end.

FRONT-PORCH GOSPEL: Never, ever lose your childlike wonder

Welcome this week to the “front porch.” “And Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘... Unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven’” – Matthew 18:1. I don’t watch the news anymore. Really.

OUT TO PASTOR: It’s my birthday, and I’ll lie if I want to

I don’t like it when people lie. If they lie once, how do you know they’re not lying again? Lately, I’ve been thinking about what the definition of a lie really is. Is there some time when telling a lie is the best to do? And, is every lie a non-truth?

FRONT-PORCH GOSPEL: ‘Lick that calf again!’

Welcome this week to the “front porch.”  A decade or so ago, I heard the great motivational speaker Zig Ziglar tell a memorable story that contained a powerful lesson.

OUT TO PASTOR: If i had a nickel for every blunder I made

I am not very agile when it comes to finances. Do not get me wrong, I know how to spend money; it is just that I do not know how to save money. One of my father's favorite quotes was, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” It never made sense to me, but my father knew how to save money.

FRONT-PORCH GOSPEL: My God is real!

Welcome this week to the ‘front porch.’ In 1962, now more than half a century ago, country singer Don Gibson came out with a powerful song with a poignant message.

OUT TO PASTOR: It’s not always what it seems

There are times when my bad hearing is a blessing. I’m not sure if I’m not listening or not hearing. It’s hard for me to tell. For example, the other night the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I were pretty much sound asleep.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Racial vandalism in my town?

I was out of town working when I was informed that our community had been vandalized with racial slurs in multiple locations. My first thought was, “What?”  I had written two recent columns on George Floyd’s death and racial issues.

OUT TO PASTOR: A family stare-off competition

During the last several months, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I have spent some quality time together. Overall, we have been enjoying our time together without any interruptions, as usually is the case.
