FERRIS – She was a force of nature.

That’s what most people noted posthumously when Ellis County Press Editor Sheila Hatfield died in September.

When she died, many knew a force had died with her.

This week, the State of Texas and State Representative John Wray, District 10 sent a resolution to The Ellis County Press office honoring Hatfield’s contribution to Ellis County.

The resolution read “A rich and purposeful life has drawn to a close with the death of Sheila JoAnn Hatfield on September 29, 2019.”

Hatfield was 74 years old.

The resolution detailed her past and how she eventually ended up in Ferris.  The Ferris Press, The North Ellis County Review, The Red Oak Record and the current Ellis County Press all were shepherded by Hatfield along with her husband Charles, the current owner of The Ellis County Press.

Her profound religious conviction and great compassion was also mentioned in the resolution.

Wray’s letter, dated Nov. 7, offered sympathy to the family left behind including husband Charles, two sons, two daughters, one sister, two stepchildren and five grandchildren.

It also mentioned how she cared for relatives and friends throughout her life.

Wray noted hers was a lifetime devoted to her family and her love of writing.

“For most of her life she graced all who knew her as a friend, wife, mother, businesswoman and journalist,” Wray wrote.

“She wore her many roles as a woman of great faith with dignity and grace. She has enriched the lives of many in Ellis County.”

Hatfield’s resolution was prepared and filed in the archives of the Texas State House of Representatives
