FERRIS PUBLIC LIBRARY: More than books (May 5, 2022)

You are invited to stop by the library and watch as Jer Giles paints murals on the walls of the Aubrey Trussell Memorial Meeting Room here at the Ferris Public Library.

He is continuing the theme to match the existing murals he painted in the main library area.

Giles has painted murals and theater art throughout Texas – he is the artist that painted the original Big Tex for the State Fair of Texas!

For Big Tex’s 50th birthday in 2002 he underwent a total makeover and every year since then, until the fire, Jer Giles was honored to keep the big guy looking his best for the fair. In 2012 he painted Big Tex’s hands to look realistic and they are all that remain of the original Big Tex.

Jer came out of retirement to work at the Ferris Public Library, for which we are extremely grateful. The library is open Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

On Saturday, May 7, 2022, voting will take place at the Ferris Public Library, 301 E. 10th Street, from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. This is a Constitutional & Joint Election.

WORD OF THE WEEK: Salary (Origin: Latin). The word salary comes from the Latin word salarium, meaning “salt money.” In ancient times, salt was used for many important things, and was often referred to as white gold.
