MANSFIELD – Calvin Simpson-Hunt returned a fumble 95 yards for a touchdown to break a 3-3 tie in the final seconds of the first quarter and Keith Abney intercepted a wide receiver hitch pass and carried it 43 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-3 early in the second half.
For its final score,Waxahachie had only to go 8 yards after linebacker La’Markus Reed’s recovery of Mansfield’s fumbled shotgun snap.
Waxahachie (6-2, 3-2), No. 13 in SportsDay’s Class 6A area ranking, did almost all of its offensive damage in the first half. Senior quarterback Roderick Hartsfield Jr. ran for a pair of scores on an otherwise quiet statistical night that finished with 40 rushing yards and 107 in the air.
Mansfield (6-2, 3-2), No. 15 in the area, trailed 31-3 five minutes into the second half and from that point dominated statistically, outgaining Waxahachie 301-39 in the final two quarters.
Mansfield quarterback Sergio Kennedy, limited to three completions and 33 passing yards in the first half, finished 18 of 37 for 218 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown toss to Jacobe Hayes for Mansfield’s first touchdown seven minutes into the third quarter that made it 31-10.
Hayes, shut out in the first half, finished with eight catches for 113 yards. Early in the fourth quarter Mansfield finished an 88-yard, 14-play drive with junior James Johnson’s 16-yard scoring run. Johnson finished with 142 yards on 18 carries, his sixth 100-yard game this season, and had an 88-yard touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty.
Hartsfield’s 54-yard connection with De’Tyrian McCoy on the third play of the game led to a 30-yard field goal by Jesse Garfias and a quick 3-0 lead for the visitors.
Mansfield senior kicking specialist Jacob Hand tied the score with a 45-yard field goal with 2:35 remaining in the opening quarter. One series earlier Hand’s 65-yard punt killed inches from the Waxahachie goal line and was instrumental in gaining field position for the field goal.
With the victory, Waxahachie leads the 6A series 3-2, with the three wins.
