DeSoto defense steps up, stops Waxahachie 42-24

DESOTO – DeSoto (4-1, 2-0 District 11-6A) led by 18 points at halftime and held Waxahachie (4-1, 1-1 District 11-6A) to just a first-half field goal. The visitors chipped away in the second though, with a 13-0 scoring run in between the third and fourth quarters to help cut the lead to 11 points in the fourth.

At one point, leading 28-3 in the third quarter, DeSoto had limited Waxahachie to 1.28 yards per carry on 23 attempts. After Waxahachie (ranked 10th in the area) cut into the lead with a 2-yard rushing touchdown from Iverson Young in the third quarter and a pair of short yardage scores from Roderick Hartsfield Jr., DeSoto’s defense returned to its first-half form.

Waxahachie, trailing 35-24 with 5:01 left in the game, executed a successful onside kick and recovered the ball at midfield. But on the drive’s first play, DeSoto sophomore nose tackle Marshall Kirven intercepted a Waxahachie pass that set up a 16-play, 4-minute long scoring drive that chewed up most of the remaining clock.
