ENNIS – Waxahachie senior quarterback Jerry Meyer III and his offense took apart Ennis 72-14 in the 105th meeting of the Battle of 287, matching longtime rivals Friday night at Lion Memorial Stadium.
The 72 points is the most scored by a one team in the history of the rivalry. Ennis held the record with 61 in 2013.
Waxahachie bolted to a 29-0 first quarter lead, requiring only 11 snaps for four touchdowns.
Meyer threw for three of the scores on passes of 24 yards to Kentorion King, 18 yards to Jordan Smith and 55 yards to an uncovered Jashawn Crayton, a sophomore wide receiver who finished with seven catches for 193 yards and three touchdowns.
Junior running back Taylen Strange, who finished with 111 yards, all in the first half, accounted for two touchdowns on runs of three and 10 yards, the latter coming in the final minute of the first half for a 37-7 lead at halftime.
Ennis scored once in the second quarter on a 12-play, 62-yard scoring drive capped by one-yard run by Elijah Davis.
With the Waxahachie backups coming on late in the third quarter with the score 58-7, new quarterback Micah Lewis scored on a 21-yard run.
Josh Wade punched in a two-yard scoring run for the reserves in the fourth quarter.
Ennis’ final touchdown came on a 10-yard scoring pass from Davis to Noah Anderson early in the fourth quarter.
