MIDLOTHIAN – The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, the City of Midlothian, and Midlothian Independent School District are partnering to bring a brand-new state-of-the-art recreation center/YMCA to serve residents of Midlothian and the surrounding communities, as well as MISD swimmers.
The decision follows extensive studies of the area’s population growth and community needs.
The project traces back to 2021, when Midlothian citizens approved $19 million in bond funding for a recreation center.
Midlothian ISD has provided approximately five acres of land and parking to help establish this center as the new home for MISD’s swim tea.m.s to practice and compete.
This new space will be located on South 14th Street near the MISD multi-purpose stadium.
This rec center/YMCA will serve residents of all ages in Midlothian and its surrounding communities. Additional a.m.enities and progra.m.ming will be determined as the City and the Y finalize plans.
YMCA facilities across North Texas commonly offer group exercise classes, a weight room, cardio equip.m.ent, a gymnasium, swim lessons and specialized progra.m.ming for active older adults.
The Y will oversee day-to-day operations and provide the sa.m.e high-quality support and services as its sister facilities.
“We are excited to enter into our first new community with a YMCA-managed building in over 25 years.
The support from the City of Midlothian and Midlothian ISD have been instrumental in giving this project life,” said Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. “Together, our goal is to ensure the next generation can be a part of an even healthier, stronger, and more connected Midlothian community.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Midlothian’s population grew 33% between 2020 and 2025, starting around 35,000 people to nearly 47,000 people. This trend follows a larger projection for North Texas as a whole, positioning Dallas-Ft. Worth to grow upward to 10 million people, potentially making it the third largest metropolitan area in the country.
The new recreation center/YMCA will help provide more job opportunities, access to vital community progra.m.ming, resources for fa.m.ilies, and act as a third space for students and neighbors.
The City of Midlothian will own the facility, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas will manage its operations once it opens. The project now moves into its design phase, beginning with the City’s request for proposal process for design and construction. Further details, including design plans and a projected opening date, will be shared as the project advances.
