WAXAHACHIE – Senior wide receiver Jordan Thompson-Woods caught four touchdown passes to rescue top-ranked Waxahachie from an early deficit, sparking a dominant 63-27 victory over Mansfield Lake Ridge in Friday’s District 11-6A opener at Lumpkins Stadium.
Thompson-Woods racked up 159 receiving yards and four scores – all in the first half – headlined by a spectacular, diving 45-yard touchdown catch with just eight seconds left in the second quarter.
Waxahachie, ranked No. 1 in the state AP 6A poll and No. 2 in the area, improves to 4-0 (1-0 in district), marking the program’s best start since 2023. Lake Ridge drops to 2-2 (0-1).
KEY GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• The Second-Quarter Surge: After being shut out in the first quarter, Waxahachie exploded for 42 points in the second period alone.
• Meyer’s Big Night: South Carolina commit Jerry Meyer III completed 14 of 22 passes for 281 yards and six touchdowns. He also caught a 17-yard touchdown on a trick play from receiver Jashawn Crayton.
• Lake Ridge’s Fast Start: The Eagles dominated the first quarter, controlling 21 of the first 24 offensive snaps to build a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Deshawn Edwards ran for two first-half scores and threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Evans.
• Two-Minute Drill: Waxahachie executed a flawless hurry-up offense before halftime. They executed a 75-yard touchdown drive in 50 seconds, followed by a 94-yard touchdown drive in just 37 seconds.
• Stat Leaders: Waxahachie’s Taylen Strange rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries, helping the team compile 669 total yards of offense.
Though Lake Ridge still holds a narrow 7-6 lead in the all-time series, Waxahachie has now won the last five consecutive meetings between the teams.
