As December begins, it is important to address anxiety in pets caused by lightning and thunderstorms, as well as the upcoming New Year fireworks.

I encourage all pet owners to consult with their local neighborhood and city to confirm if firework displays are scheduled during this holiday season.

Some cities are kicking off holiday celebrations early; for example, the City of Ferris will host Christmas on the Square on Dec. 6.

You will need to be alert and take measures before a storm or fireworks are upon us.

You never start anxiety medications in the morning or start them without doing a trial run beforehand. Each pet, just like people, handles medications differently. You want to know what to expect beforehand so you will be more prepared.

Trazadone is a preferred medication for anxiety and can be ordered online through your veterinarian, provided your pet has had an exam within the last year and is up-to-date on the rabies vaccination.

Trazodone can reduce situational anxiety in dogs and is normally dosed at 2.5–7 mg/kg (1.1–3.2 mg/lb) every 8–24 hours by mouth. You always start on the low dose and never start without consulting with a veterinarian. An anxiety dosage may be given up to 3 days, if the holiday celebrations last longer than usual.

Effects begin within 30-60 minutes and last 6-12 hours, peaking on the 3rd hour. Give medication after feeding to reduce stomach upset.

If your pet is taking anxiety medication, it’s best to avoid jogging or vigorous play, as these medicines often cause drowsiness or affect balance.

Now is an ideal time for positive reinforcement training and addressing anxiety. Be gentle with pets on anxiety medication, as they are more sensitive; avoid startling them.

Combining desensitization techniques with medication can help your pet manage anxiety effectively.
