RED OAK – More information has been released regarding last month’s I-35 shutdown from Dallas into Red Oak with a police chase that ended in an officer involved shooting and one person dead.

According to an arrest affidavit, the Dallas Police Department decided on the high-speed chase when Gabriel Cerna, 29 pushed a female out of the SUV he was riding in on I-35.

Police had identified Cerna, who was in the vehicle, as a capital murder suspect. The affidavit stated Dallas PD was following Cerna’s SUV as it entered I-35 southbound in Oak Cliff. As the SUV was in the process of being stopped on I-35 near Glenn Heights/DeSoto, Cerna moved from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat of the vehicle, pushing Kristina Urquidimora, 32, out of the SUV.

Cerna continued driving on I-35, entering Red Oak and slamming into another vehicle from behind, resulting in the death of Anthony Welch and severe injury to Welch’s wife Dee.

Cerna then exited his disabled vehicle with a gun in his hand and moved away from the pursuing officers. Officers fired their weapons hitting the suspect, then provided life-saving medical care to the suspect.

Cerna has been charged with capital murder, aggravated robbery and evading arrest with a vehicle. He was released from the hospital and booked into the Dallas County jail on Jan. 24 with a $2.09 million bond.

Urquidimora, the female passenger, was booked into Dallas County jail with a $225,000 bond. Dallas PD said Urquidimora was aware Cerna was wanted for murder before the deadly chase in Red Oak occurred.
