RED OAK – The Red Oak Police Department was busy working alongside the Texas Rangers Thursday morning and into the evening after a Dallas Police chase was halted at Red Oak Road with one person killed and another severely injured.

According to Sergeant William Lockridge, Safety Education, Media and Communications, Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident happened around 11 a.m. on Jan. 16, when the Dallas Police Department was involved in not only the police chase out of Dallas but also an officer-involved shooting, which occurred on IH-35 in Red Oak.

“Preliminary information indicates the Dallas Police Department located a capital murder suspect in Dallas County and attempted to stop the vehicle they were in,” Lockridge stated in a media release.

“The suspect immediately refused to comply or surrender and began fleeing in the vehicle.

“Dallas Police Officers pursued the suspect until he entered Red Oak in Ellis County on IH-35, where he crashed with another vehicle.

“One person in the other vehicle was killed, and another was severely injured.”

It was reported the suspect then exited his disabled vehicle with a firearm in his hand and moved away from the pursuing officers.

“Dallas Police Officers discharged their weapons, striking the murder suspect,” Lockridge said.

“Officers then provided life-saving medical care to the suspect, and he was transported to an area hospital for treatment.”

The names of the victims and the suspect have not been released.

I-35 Southbound was closed from approximately 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Traffic was backed-up in the early afternoon for over seven miles, with motorists sitting for up to two hours on the highway and traffic being rerouted.

One person said it took over two hours to get home from Duncanville to Red Oak, while another person said she sat on the highway for two hours without moving more than a quarter mile.

While the accident and death of the motorist happened in Red Oak, the Texas Rangers were called for the officer involved shooting investigation.
