Ferris – Beginning at Earline Jackson Park, the City of Ferris will utilize a safer infill alternative over traditional rubber tire infill for new artificial turf installation.

Artificial turf, known for its low maintenance and durability, has been a subject of concern due to potential health risks.

Studies have raised alarms about the use of crumb rubber infill, made from recycled tires, which may contain heavy metals, PFAS, phthalates, and PAHs – substances linked to various health risks including cancer.

Acknowledging these concerns, Ferris has taken a proactive approach which John DeLeon, Assistant City Manager & Chief Operations Officer explained, “Our decision to opt for a safer infill material, utilizing organic materials, reflects our dedication to the well-being of our community, particularly our children who are the most frequent users of these playgrounds.”

The new turf at Earline Jackson Park is just the beginning of Ferris’s commitment to safer recreational spaces.

This alternative infill offers comparable durability and maintenance benefits while minimizing exposure to harmful substances.

“It’s a significant step towards a healthier, more sustainable park, play, and recreational environment for all residents.

“We believe in creating spaces that are not only functional but also safeguard the health of our citizens,” City Manager Brooks Williams said.

“In the City of Ferris, we prioritize the well-being of our youth above all.

“While there are ongoing debates about whether certain chemicals in rubber infill might be linked to cancer, we choose not to allow the protection of our citizens to be hung in the balance of these arguments.

“Our focus is clear – the health and safety of our young people.

“We believe firmly that removing even the potential risk associated with these materials is not just a precaution, but a necessary step towards ensuring a safer future for our children. It’s about doing what’s right, not getting entangled in endless debates.”

Ferris is dedicated to staying at the forefront of safe and sustainable development. It continues to monitor research and advancements in artificial turf technology, ensuring its citizens enjoy the benefits of these spaces without compromising their health.
