ELLIS COUNTY – If you frequent U.S. Highway 287 the future for that roadway might be changing in the next few years.

The Texas Department of Transportation recently conducted a study in which the possibility of converting Highway 287 into an interstate highway could become a reality.

The study is being conducted from Port Arthur, Texas to the Oklahoma state line, which is 754 miles in total.

According to the TxDOT feasibility study, “The US 287 corridor serves as a major connection route for freight traffic and intermodal travel and passes through both rural and urban areas throughout the state, connecting small towns and major metropolitan areas.”

Studies will continue involving this project through 2024. The implementation plan is expected to be developed by the spring of 2025.
