MIDLOTHIAN – The Midlothian Police Department recognized two of its officers last week for taking the department’s motto of “Service Above Self” to heart.
Officer Elijah Samuels and Officer Nicklaus VanDerkar were awarded the Department’s Meritorious Conduct Award for their acts of service on a call to assist an unresponsive person on Sept. 25.
Officers were dispatched to the 1300 Block of Pecan Ridge Drive where a female caller had told dispatch her 71-year-old husband had collapsed and did not appear to be breathing.
The caller attempted CPR but was unable.
When Samuels arrived on the scene, he began to perform chest compressions on the subject
VanDerkar arrived minutes later to help Samuels and both attempted life saving measures for approximately two minutes before being relieved by medics from the Midlothian Fire Department.
Officers then assisted the wife and helped her in contacting family members.
Samuels also helped her with transportation to the hospital while VanDerkar continued to help with contacting other members of the family.
The gentleman passed away; however, Midlothian Fire Department administration commended the officers for the way they managed the situation and in helping the wife.
The agreed the officer’s efforts did prolong the man’s life to the point that medical professionals had an increased chance of saving him.
