WAXAHACHIE – A former middle-school teacher from Grand Prairie ISD, Matthew Ramos, 34, of Midlothian, was sentenced to 15 years in prison last week.

Ramos was sentenced over charges of an improper relationship between a teacher and student, and another 10 years with a $2,000 fine for online solicitation of a child.

The incident began in the Fall of 2021 with Ramos beginning, “a relationship with a former student who was then 16 years old and in high school,” an Ellis County District Attorney press released stated.

The offenses were prosecuted in Ellis County because many of the text messages, including photos and text messages, were found in Ramos’ possession at his home in Midlothian.

Ramos pled guilty to the offenses in July, and was sentenced on Sept. 21.

An improper relationship with a student is a second-degree felony with a punishment range of two to 20 years in prison. Online solicitation as charged is a third-degree offense with a punishment range of two to 10 years in prison.

The sentences will run concurrently.

“Teachers hold a position of power and trust over our most vulnerable citizens: our children,” said District Attorney Ann Montgomery. “When that trust is broken, it affects the child, the school, and the fabric of our community.”
