WRONG-WAY DRIVER SHUTS DOWN I-45
WILMER – Wilmer Police responded to multiple 911 calls on Sept. 15 at around 11 p.m. regarding a dark-colored SUV traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-45 near the Mars Road exit.
The actions of the SUV’s driver heading in the wrong direction on the highway resulted in a major vehicle collision.
Wilmer officers quickly responded to a call locating the vehicle in neighboring Hutchins near Fulghum Road and Wintergreen Road at about 11:10 p.m.
But by the time police arrived, a collision had taken place.
Police shut down traffic on the highway and secured additional units as well as medical and fire department support.
The collision involved two vehicles, with three people including an infant and the suspect.
Three individuals, including the suspect, were transported to area hospitals in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery according to Wilmer police.
There was evidence at the scene that alcohol may have been involved in the accident.
The driver’s name has not been released by police, and charges are pending at this time.
MEDICAL EMERGENCY SUSPECTED CAUSE IN LAST WEEK’S I-45 FATALITY
WILMER – A medical emergency might have been the cause of a deadly accident Friday, Sept. 15.
The crash occurred around 12:30 in the afternoon in the northbound lanes of I-45 near Malloy Bridge Road.
Traffic was stalled for at least an hour according to one driver who was stopped in the accident.
Wilmer Police found a grey sedan facing southbound in the left lane of travel on the northbound side of the highway.
Wilmer Police, Ferris Public Safety Department and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office all worked the accident and closed the northbound I-45 lanes during the investigation.
According to Wilmer Police, the vehicle was driving northbound and due to unknown circumstances entered the median striking the wire-divider wall crossing to the opposing lanes of traffic after rolling over several times.
The lone person in the vehicle did not survive the collision. There were no additional vehicles involved in the accident.
Police did not release the name of the driver pending contacting family.
The collision is still under investigation, and no further details were available by press time.
