WAXAHACHIE – A number of surrounding cities are using the camera, and now the Waxahachie Police Department is part of the club too.

The Waxahachie City Council recently approved a multiple use agreement between the police department and the Texas Department of Transportation allowing for the use of a fixed license plate recognition system, or Flock cameras.

Flock cameras can record vehicle information including license plate numbers and vehicle type, including the color and year, in order to assist in finding a suspect through videos and images taken with the cameras.

The city received the two new cameras thanks to a grant from Walmart Inc. Cameras will be installed in the N. US 77 and US 287 corridor, near Walmart.

While the cameras are cutting edge technology, the Waxahachie Police Department did say to use the camera, probable cause is needed.

The cameras are also useful in various police departments in Texas. They can use the information as a team since the system is linked throughout agencies in the region.

Cameras cost $2,500 each and roughly $5,500 per year for operation and maintenance.

Purchased by Walmart through its grant, the large chain store will also pay $5,500 a year for a subscription to operate the cameras.
