ENNIS – Ellis County Judge Todd Little presented a proclamation to City of Ennis Mayor Angeline Juenemann at last week’s Commissioner’s Court recognizing the City of Ennis for the sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary of its founding.
The date of the anniversary is June 8.
“Today, it’s our pleasure to present a proclamation celebrating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the founding of the City of Ennis,” Ellis County Judge Todd Little said.
Little then went on to explain how the Houston and Texas Central Railway Company began laying track in 1856 with a vision of connecting Houston to St. Louis.
“In order to establish its northern Texas headquarters, the railroad captain chose a site in Ellis County where the company purchased 647 acres of land in 1871.”
The land purchased became known as Ennis.
The proclamation also stated that since the city’s incorporation, Ennis has continued to grow as an agricultural and industrial community and is also famous for its bluebonnets.
It stated the city remains one of the true small towns that envelope visitors in a unique kind of Texas heritage that people do not find elsewhere.
“This is certainly a great day for the citizens of the City of Ennis – to be honored by this proclamation, to be part of Ellis County and part of Texas,” Juenemann said.
“We are so blessed to have community spirit, a ‘get it done attitude,’ and I know I speak on behalf of all our staff and all the citizens of Ennis to thank you very much for recognizing us.
“It means very, very much, and we hope the continued partnership lasts for a long, long time.”
