MIDLOTHIAN – Midlothian Independent School Board Trustee Andrea Walton left a vacant seat recently when she resigned from her seat in Place 7.
Walton was also the Vice-President on the school board.
MISD school board President Trustee Gary Vineyard, Place 2, said the board will determine at the March 7 meeting if there will be an election to replace Walton or if the board will make an appointment to fill the vacancy.
Walton sent a resignation letter to Jo Ann Fey, Superintendent of Schools for Midlothian ISD and said the decision to leave the school board was not a decision she took lightly.
She also noted the past four years had taken a toll on her health.
She gave a handwritten resignation letter to Vineyard which read, “To resign immediately for all the reasons listed in the letter I gave to Jo Ann Fey. Please consider this my formal notice.”
Voters elected Walton for her latest term in November 2020. That term was to end in May 2023.
Midlothian ISD sent a statement regarding Walton’s resignation, “The Midlothian ISD Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of board member Andrea Walton at the regularly scheduled Board meeting on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022.
“MISD thanks Mrs. Walton for her five years of service.
“Mrs. Walton was elected to place 7 in November 2017.”
Walton said she believed she could make a bigger difference while volunteering in the classroom versus sitting on the school board.
She said she was honored to serve in the role of trustee and humbled by the trust the community placed in her.
“Not once did I take that responsibility lightly,” she concluded.
“Hundreds of people have reached out in support of this decision and the core values of getting back to a community focus supporting the classroom.”
