FERRIS – While many local police agencies in the area have no K9s in their department, the Ferris Police Department has been blessed with two.
Both Fuse, a female Pit-Bull rescue and Thor, a male Belgian Malinois are trained for narcotics, and Thor is also a bite dog – meaning he can handle a fugitive chase if needed.
That doesn’t come without weekly training though.
Both Fuse and her K9 partner Officer Aaron Shook and Thor and his partner Officer Charles Banks spend every Thursday at Sector K9 training for 12 hours.
Thor and Fuse train for narcotics, and then Thor goes on to learn more of the ropes about his bite dog abilities too.
Fuse, a two-year-old rescue is Shook’s first K9 partner. The officer originally comes from Irving PD.
Thor is an eight-month old superpower who ended up in Ferris on his first assignment with Banks.
He is also multilingual, and when commanded by Banks they speak eastern European together.
Ferris PD Police Chief John Deleon said they decided to add the K9s to their team because in the past there have been a number of drug offenders and both dogs are narcotic trained.
Ferris PD also helps other agencies when needed with Thor and Fuse’s talents.
“Dogs have the ability to smell scents better than humans, and we use that to our advantage when we need to find narcotics,” DeLeon said.
“These two K9 teams have really helped the department and are an asset to the city of Ferris overall.”
