FEBRUARY 11: U.S. Rep. Ron Wright dies following COVID-19 diagnosis

Texas Republican Rep. Ron Wright was born April 8, 1953, in Cherokee County, Texas, and died Feb. 7, 2021. He represented the 6th Congressional District.

 

FEBRUARY 18: Valentine’s Day brings freezing temperatures

As of early Tuesday morning there were as many as 4,375,245 customers in Texas without power.

MARCH 4: 4 vie for Wright’s vacant spot

By March 11, that number had risen to 23, including Wright’s wife Susan.

 

MARCH 11: Tax increase sought by ESD No. 5

According to Ferris City Manager Brooks Williams, that amount doesn’t work out well for the 1,800 homes paying both Ferris taxes – and ESD 5 taxes. Citizens within the city limits would be paying more in taxes, while already having a professional fire fighting service available to them.

Wright finished in first place in a 23-person filed with 19-percent of the vote. Ellzey was second with 14-percent.

 

MAY 27: Weekend flood waters claim life of Red Oak man

A 67-yeart-old man’s car was swept away by swift floodwaters just south of the 258-mile marker on the service road.

 

JUNE

 

JUNE 3: 10 area suspects arrested for online solicitation of a minor

The arrests were part of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division, undercover operation called “Operation Genesis.”

 

JUNE 3: Hours before Texas House plans voting bill passage, Democrats stage walkout

Texas Democrats walked out of the state House’s chamber just before midnight to deny Republicans the quorum needed to hold a final vote on a controversial bill that would tighten voting laws in Texas.

 

JUNE 17: Theft charges filled against county tax office employee

Dena Marie Hollon was arrested on charges of theft property and money laundering.

 

JULY

 

JULY 8: Abducted Ennis baby found safe

A missing Ennis child was recovered safely after an Amber Alert went statewide for seven-month-old Miguel David Lee Ramirez.  Ramirez’s mother, Faith Joann Reid,20, of Fort Worth and Marcus Allhoff Nast, 24, also of Fort Worth, entered the child’s father’s residence at gunpoint and took the child. The two were arrested for aggravated assault.

 

AUGUST

 

AUGUST 5: Ellzey wins 6th Congressional Dist. seat

Final results showed Ellzey with 53-percent of the vote and Susan Wright with 47-percent of the vote in unofficial results.

 

SEPTEMBER

 

SEPTEMBER 16: Ferris opens COVID Therapy Center

Spearheaded by the City of Ferris and Ferris City Manager Brooks Williams, the center, located at the Ferris Scout House, is a “pop-up” monoclonal antibody therapy center where Ferris and Ellis County residents can receive the antibody therapy treatment free of charge.

 

SEPTEMBER 23: Gov. Abbott sets Tuesday, Sept. 28 as special runoff election for House District 10

The runoff features two Republicans: John Wray, Ellzey’s predecessor in the seat, and Brian Harrison, the former chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under former President Donald Trump. Harrison finished first in the eight-way special election late last month, getting 41% of the vote to 36% for Wray.

 

OCTOBER

 

OCTOBER 7: Harrison wins HD-10 runoff

Brian Harrison wins the runoff against John Wray, receiving 55% of the vote.

 

OCTOBER 21: $660K in stolen vehicles, auto parts seized

Twenty-seven stolen vehicles and dozens of stolen vehicle parts were found on a property in Italy. 2 men were arrested and charged with engaging in organized criminal activity and theft.

 

NOVEMBER

 

NOVEMBER 4: County to redraw pct. boundaries

According to the 2020 Census, Ellis County has added 42,000 residents since 2010 – it now has 192,000 residents. Due to the increase in population, officials are redrawing the four commissioner boundaries which will impact citizens.

 

NOVEMBER 11: Commissioners choose redistricting map with highest deviations

 

NOVEMBER 11: D.R. Horton to build 830 residential lots on 215-acre Walton tract in Ferris

 

NOVEMBER 18: Father, son dead following crash

A Ferris man and his 5-year-old son lost their lives just after sunset when they were struck by a motorist heading eastbound on Farm-to-Market Road 664 and Jimmy Birdwell Blvd.

 

DECEMBER

 

DECEMBER 23: Student threat causes Ferris ISD lockdown

The Ferris Independent School District went into lockdown after a student at the Junior High School pulled a manual fire alarm between classes.

 

DECEMBER 23: Fatal crash shuts down I-45

A 28-year-old Bedford man was killed and another person injured after a car drove the wrong way down Interstate 45 and crashed head on into an 18-wheeler near Palmer. Both sides of the highway were shut down due to burning debris and hazmat concerns from 3 – 6:30 a.m.
