ROYCE CITY – After two first-quarter turnovers—one on Ennis’ first play from scrimmage, and another on the kickoff following Royse City’s first touchdown (a 24-yard touchdown pass from Kenneth Spring to Ahmon Dozier) – Ennis began to look more like its undefeated, state-ranked self. Ennis rushed for 474 yards and six touchdowns, and held Royse City – which entered Friday’s game averaging 512.5 yards and 42.13 points per game – to 348 total yards.
Ennis, tied for sixth in The Dallas Morning News’ area 5A rankings, held Royse City junior Jonah Roberson, who reeled in 225 receiving yards and four touchdowns a week earlier, to four catches and 34 yards.
Ennis senior Dee Johnson handled the bulk of the work, with 314 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. He was held scoreless in the first half, but sprung free for a 4-yard score with 8:25 left in the third quarter, a 77-yard touchdown with 3:49 left in the period and a 24-yard scoring run late in the fourth.
Ennis will play for a perfect regular season – and a fifth district title in six years – next week at home against Corsicana. It clinched the No. 1 playoff seed in the district Friday, but because eighth ranked Royse City and Forney (6-3, 5-1) each have one district loss, Ennis has not yet clinched the outright title.
