ITALY – The new school year has officially kicked into high gear and while it is safe to say school won’t be the same since the pandemic began last year, Rachel L. Kistner, Italy ISD’s new superintendent said, “The challenges we face are not unique to Italy ISD. COVID has impacted our schools and we are moving forward to best meet the needs of our students, staff and families.”

In other words, ISDs like Italy with superintendents like Kistner are determined to assure students get the best education possible during this trying time.

“Our message to students, staff, families and the community is “One Voice, One Direction, One Team,” Kistner explained.

“I work closely with the other superintendents in the county so as to not miss opportunities or recommendations on things we need to adjust for the safety of everyone,” Kistner added.

New to Italy ISD this year, Kistner has 34 years experience in public education. Her background started as a teacher/coach in Ohio before moving to Texas.

She began her Texas career in Red Oak ISD as a teacher, and then served in the roles of assistant principal, principal and finally as the director of special education.

Kistner was also at the Burleson ISD for a short period of time as their executive director of special services.

She accepted her current position in Italy ISD in March of this year.

“I am excited to be serving in what I see as the hidden treasure in Ellis County,” she said about her new job and the location.

“Italy ISD is part of a tight-knit community that takes extraordinary pride in its history and traditions.  They support the students and staff of the school district in whatever way they can; from attending games and activities to providing for unspoken needs of our families.

“They encourage us, cheer us on and are instrumental in maintaining the family atmosphere we foster in our district.”

As for changes in the new school, Italy ISD will continue to strive to provide the best curriculum and support for the teachers so they are equipped with what they need to teach the students.

Kistner said, “HB 4545 is a new opportunity for us as we strive to provide intervention for our students who experienced a loss in learning.

“We are also focusing on providing support for students who are doing well at all levels but need enrichment, as well as additional support in preparation for our high school students and their chosen post-secondary choices.”
