WILMER – Reading is a marvelous adventure.
The City of Wilmer made sure the adventure was part of its city’s summer activities for local children when the 2021 Summer Reading Club program was introduced a few months ago.
As part of the incentive to read the city also awarded prizes last week to those who participated in the summer reading program.
The Prize Pak winners for the program included Jayden Venegas for the “Little Boy Prize” an Elmo’s ABC and Night Night Farm and a “Little Girl Prize” going to Jasmine Bass who received Mega Blocks and How to Catch a Mermaid. Jaden Menegas won the Art Prize gift; rock art, a drawing pad and colored pencils.
The “Back to School Prize” was awarded to winner Maya Coral, which was a backpack and a variety of school supplies and the “Girly Girly Prize” went to Malicia Colorado including a Bluetooth speaker, bath bombs and a selfie stick.
E.M. Gilliam Memorial Public Library Interim Librarian Jennifer Dominguez announced the name of the five winners on Friday.
“Remember that reading helps children enhance their imagination and helps improve and develop cognitive skills,” Dominguez said.
The City of Wilmer introduced this creative way of keeping children interested in reading for the summer months for the first time this year and Wilmer Mayor Sheila Petta said, “The City of Wilmer is so excited to present the first ever virtual story time offered to our residents.”
The last story time was held virtually on Tuesday, July 27.
The virtual programs were heard on the city’s Facebook website every other Tuesday since summer began.
Most of the featured books during the reading program were from “Tale & Tales.”
“Thanks to all who participated in the Summer Reading Program,” staff concluded after the winners were announced on the city’s You Tube channel late last week.
