WILMER – As the pandemic in some cases wreaked havoc on structured ways for children to get their hands on and read a book, the City of Wilmer’s E.M. Gilliam Memorial Public Library found a creative way for the summer months to help children get their hands on a virtual book instead.
“The City of Wilmer is so excited to present the first ever virtual story time offered to our residents,” said Wilmer Mayor Sheila Petta.
In its first year, Interim Librarian Jennifer Dominguez said it was important they come up with creative ways to keep residents engaged during COVID-19 and beyond and virtual story time was one way of doing that.
“Remember that reading helps children enhance their imagination and helps improve and develop cognitive skills,” Dominguez said.
The virtual programs have proven a valuable tool for the library to connect with the community and story time has been heard at the city’s Facebook website every other Tuesday since summer began.
The last story time will be Tuesday, July 27.
While Wilmer might have been the first to come up with the idea of the virtual reading program, since that time other cities have followed.
Most of the featured books this summer have pertained to the summer reading program called “Tale & Tales.”
