FERRIS – Are elections being affected by COVID-19 due to residents not having access to city offices and necessary paperwork?
Are residents unable to have access to necessary paperwork for the upcoming May election because there is no one at the office to assist in distributing applications for residents to file for these upcoming open seats?
And – these deadlines and rules are state law.
Recently, an Ellis County resident who has asked to remain anonymous stopped by City Hall in her town to pick up an application to run for city council.
The office was closed, and when the number on the door was called there was no answer.
An office administrator contacted her later that day and she indicated she wanted to pick up an application.
She still has not received the necessary paperwork she needs to complete in order to run for city council on the May 1, ballot.
In all Ellis County cities, the deadline to file an application to run for city council and independent school board trustee for the May 1, election is Friday, Feb. 12.
Candidates must file no later than the close of the business day this Friday in order to run for office.
Now more than ever it is necessary to be the change you want to see and to enforce laws enabling residents to run for office in their cities and have a voice.
