After a tough loss on the road to Colleyville-Heritage last week, the Hawks bounced back with a 46-35 win over District rival Midlothian HS, in what may have been the Hawks best all-around team performance.
Red Oak has struggled to put a complete game together, but on Friday the 13th, and on the road, finally did. The Hawks ground controlled most of the game. However, the Panthers, who struggled early on moving the ball, were able to get their ground game going as well. Once both offenses got going, this game turned into a shootout, until the Hawks defense forced 3 costly turnovers. A strip and fumble recovery late in the 2nd quarter allowed the Hawks Zachary Sanders (9) to score a quick TD to close out the first half with a 27-21 lead after trailing 14-7 in the 1st quarter.
Sanders had a big night with 24 carries for 207 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Although the Hawks defense gave up 35 points, Linebackers Cameron Green (24) and Carter Lincoln (27) both had 14 tackles and were constantly in the Panther’s backfield. Green was also credited with 3 QB sacks. Jackson Bailey (6) and Devin Steen (16) were credited with one QB sack each.
Red Oak continued the ground game attack in the 2nd half, and Midlothian had no answer. The Hawks offense gained 538 total yards. The Hawks defense sealed the win with just under a minute when Jackson Bailey (6) intercepted a pass and returned near mid-field. QB Joshua Ervin took two kneel downs to end the game.
The Hawks move to 3-1 in District play, while Midlothian falls to 1-3. The Hawks host Mansfield Summit (2-0) on Friday, Nov. 20 at Billy Goodloe Stadium. The Mansfield Summit-Colleyville Heritage games was canceled on Friday Nov. 13 due to Covid-19 related issues. Kickoff is scheduled at 7 p.m. Be sure to purchase your tickets online.
