COPPERAS COVE – Shawn Cherry motored for 199 yards on 20 carries to lead Waxahachie past Copperas Cove 34-7 Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Bulldawg Stadium.

In a first half defensive struggle, Waxahachie kicker Clyde Melick started the scoring with a pair of field goals. Then Cherry, who rushed for 97 yards on 14 tries in the first half, scored twice in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. He gained 102 yards after intermission.

Cherry also rushed for all but 25 of his team’s 224 net yards on the ground while Waxahachie’s defense yielded a total of 194 yards and a single TD.

The WHS defense yielded several yards between the 20s but limited the home squad to 73 net yards passing and recorded four quarterback sacks – one of which resulted in a recovered fumble in the end zone for a Waxahachie score in the second period.
