WILMER – The City of Wilmer’s new elementary school already has a feather in its cap before the doors even open.

The Eddie Bernice Johnson Elementary School’s Principal Umoja S. Turner did not respond to questions by press time, but in an email to city staff it was noted, “We have been selected as the Start Strong! school for Dallas ISD in partnership with Office Depot.”

Translated, this means all the students at the new elementary school will receive backpacks filled with school supplies and Office Depot gift cards. Staff will also receive gift cards and resources.

The Start Proud!™ 2020 Office Depot Philanthropic Back-To-School Program was established in early 2018.

The primary goal is to focus on causes that not only align with the company business, but that also speak to enabling opportunities for people to succeed, no matter their challenges or circumstances.

The Start Proud!™ beneficiaries are teachers given supplies for their classroom, but also an All-Star Teacher is chosen. That teacher is chosen as being an exemplary teacher of the school and is given a surprise recognition and celebration for their extraordinary efforts in the classroom.

The chosen teacher will also be gifted with a special package of premium classroom supplies for the school year.

The Eddie Bernice Johnson Elementary School is a new elementary school located in Wilmer and is set to open at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year per Dallas ISD school opening guidelines.
