WAXAHACHIE – Paul Perry, Ellis County Commissioner, pct. 3, said he will be suggesting at Tuesday afternoon’s Commissioners Court meeting that a change be made regarding the appraisal board in Ellis County.
Perry said he would like to see the members of the appraisal board be elected positions in the future.
If such a change should occur it would come from the legislature, and would need to be introduced at the next legislative session in 2021.
Commissioners at the Ellis County Commissioners Court will also be discussing Ellis County tax appraisal assessments.
While for some Ellis County residents it is too late to appeal taxes for the year, depending on the date of the property notice, there are some residents still eligible to appeal.
“While we can’t change the rate, we can offset the appraisal by reducing the rate” Perry said.
The pct. 3, commissioner said many Ellis County residents have come to the commissioners with concerns about their property tax rate.
“Due to COVID-19, there were changes this year regarding the deadlines and that had many residents concerned – we want to help alleviate that stress as much as possible,” Perry added.
Perry spearheaded this agenda item on the Commissioner Court agenda this week, also raising discussion on when the Tax Collector’s office will be open again.
As of Monday, June 15, the Waxahachie Tax Collector’s office was reopened, however the Midlothian and Red Oak offices are still closed.
