WILMER – The Wilmer K9 team of Officer Sawyer and his partner Mac made a successful drug bust last week during a routine traffic stop.

On Mar. 11, Sawyer stopped a 2007 Jeep Compass after observing the driver had committed a traffic violation.

The driver was Danette Lee Ozuna, 44, a Wilmer resident.

Ozuna was wanted for an outstanding felony warrant out of Austin for the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance of between four to 200 grams.

During the traffic stop, officers also found a clear bag under the driver’s seat.

Officer K9 Mac, the city’s drug detection dog, was brought in to confirm if the bag had drugs inside.

Mac made a positive hit, and subsequent investigation revealed the bag contained 281.9 grams of a substance that field tested positive for Methamphetamine.

Ozuna was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance PG 1 >=200g<400g.

She was booked into the Dallas County Jail on a first-degree felony charge, with a bond of $75,000.

“The street value of the drugs could easily be $13,000,” Wilmer Police Chief Victor Kemp said.

Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that has been shown to release up to four times as much dopamine in the brain as cocaine.

Kemp noted on the Wilmer PD police department Facebook page that the substance is cheaper than even crack cocaine, and has become a very popular drug throughout many different segments of the population.

“Meth is highly addicting,” Kemp explained. “The cost per gram is not the real cost. It can cost you your marriage, cost you a CPS case and it can cause you to lose your children as well as jail time, lawyer’s fees and possibly probation or parole.”
